GALERIE MAISON KASINI TO UNVEIL LARGE, INTERACTIVE KINETIC SCULPTURE BY CLEMENT YEH DURING NUIT BLANCHE
Clement Yeh will unveil his large, interactive, kinetic sculpture, All Four Hooves Leave the Ground at 4PM on February 27th during the Nuit blanche à Montréal portion of the MONTREAL HIGH LIGHTS Festival. The work is part of Clement Yeh: Montreal in Sculpture, an exhibit that explores Yeh’s use of Montreal’s visual language in sculptural work. The exhibition runs February 24th to March 27th.
Inspired by Montreal’s uniquely vibrant bicycle culture, which was voted by an American bicycling magazine as the most bike-friendly city in North America, Clement made All Four Hooves Leave the Ground. Nuit blanche à Montréal visitors will pedal a stationary bicycle to operate a spinning film shutter and drum, on which is displayed an animated sequence of a running horse and rider. The sculpture is a large, interactive, kinetic work that reconstructs the mechanical elements of an analog film projector. Constructed primarily of steel and aluminum, it is an homage to Eadweard Muybridge’s early photographic experiments with capturing motion. Other influences for this work include: David Hoffos, Chris Burden, Jean Tinguely, and the designs for human–powered movement by Leonardo Da Vinci.
Also in the exhibition, “Serie de Signage” is inspired by vintage commercial signage in Montreal. Yeh creates large wood sculptures that employ a visual language stripped of all commercial value. The two-dimensional pieces rely on the technique of trompe l’oeil painting to convey the visual information of design and aesthetic and the craft-based art of woodworking to convey a streamlined, almost minimal look. The result is beautifully made sculptures that are rooted in the city’s heritage.
